What I Learned from Watching the show “Queer Eye”

If you’re not familiar with this “FEEL GOOD” show, I’d advise you to start getting acquainted. This show is the perfect antidote for the “winter doldrums” and can provide a really energizing departure from the stressors of living within this global pandemic.

The Fab Five experts (as they’re aptly named) offer to help people grow into better, healthier and more capable human beings – a personal internal and external transformation.

It delivers uplifting messages with a dash of makeover.

The show has somewhat of a formula – the team meets with someone who fits into a specific archetype – the type of person who takes care of everyone else to the neglect of their own needs; the widower who is stuck in the past, the young woman who has given her all to her bakery business & forgotten herself in the process.

Sound familiar; parents? MOMS in particular? Do we take care of others before ourselves?

Each Fab Five member has their own expertise & inspirational words:

Jonathan teaches them that they can look and feel better with a great haircut and new beauty regime. “I want people to fall in love with themselves and to be really proud & full of joy for the space they take up. If someone else appreciates the space you take up, then that’s the icing on the cake”– Jonathan Van Ness

Bobby livens up your physical environment by redesigning your home or office – “Coming home to a tidy pulled together space will help everything in your life feel the same” – Bobby Berk

Karamo helps motivate you to re energize your passions, profession & your spiritual life – “Never stop believing in yourself, you had it all along” – Karamo Brown

Tan will overhaul you with a new wardrobe & show you how much better you will look with clothes that fit properly – “You being your true self isn’t going to offend anybody” – Tan France

Antoni will teach you how to cook new recipes that will fit into your lifestyle – “Food can offer a moment of pure emotional pleasure in an otherwise hard & difficult world” – Antoni Porowski

Wouldn’t life be grand if we all had our own personal Fab Five?

Think of this show as your own personal EMOTIONAL & PHYSICAL FIRST AID KIT!

If we could open this kit daily, what would you borrow from our Fab Five team?

Will it be something small like styling your hair, or buying some new lipstick? Might it be buying some new “throw pillows” or painting a wall a new color? Are there inspirational podcasts or books that make you feel good? Maybe it’s an old hobby that you bring back for fun?

YUP, I’m going to say it. SELF CARE. The 2 words we keep hearing, but everybody thinks they don’t have time to do.

I work from home and I made a pact with myself that I would try to make at least one coffee date a week. I needed more excuses to leave the house during work days.

With one particular friend, the coffee meetups have rules…

NO SWEATS OR LEGGINGS that we’ve been wearing in the house. Effort had to go into our dates – a pinch of makeup and a cute outfit.

We both said how restored this made us feel just from this little effort.

I decided I need to “UP” my cooking game. My husband and my daughter are so creative and imaginative in the kitchen that I needed to try out some new recipes. I was feeling uninspired.

I watched a tutorial and made a fantastic new dish that can be added to our rotation. It actually helped to reinvigorate my cooking passion.

Self care means different things to different people. What is it that makes you feel good, energized and more clear headed?

Remember…SELF CARE IS CHILD CARE. Take care of yourself and you’ll be more prepared to deal with any challenges that arise in your household.

Take it from the Fab Five guys…”Don’t count yourself out. You’re strong, you’re a Kelly Clarkson song, you got this”.
